August WTA tournament in Montreal canceled

The organizers of the WTA Tennis Tournament in Montreal have canceled the tournament, which should start in four months. A similar fate is expected to be experienced in the men’s tournament in Toronto, which is also scheduled in mid-August, the same time as the biggest tennis tournament in Slovenia, challenger in Portorož.

The reason for the quick decision of the organizers is the fact that all sports and cultural events are canceled in the Canadian province of Quebec due to the pandemic of the new coronavirus until 31 August. ATP and WTA tennis tournaments are being suspended until June 7, but there are growing rumors that tennis is not promising a bright future in 2020 and that the season may be canceled altogether. From major tournaments, the French Open has been postponed to September from late May and early June, Wimbledon has already been canceled and the US Open in New York is scheduled for late August. The questions that arise are, however, whether the organizers will be able to conduct the tournament with the spectators and if there will be sufficient interest in banning the visit to hold the tournament without the spectators being present.
