Horse racing – The Field formula: Reduced field and Total field
The Field formula allows you to associate additional horses with a base of horses of which you are certain. There are two types of Field formula: the Reduced Field and the Total Field.
The reduced field and total field – their principle
When you decide to take the Champ formula, you simply decide to play your favorite horse (s) (base horses on which you are sure they will be well placed on arrival) and to complete your bet with a selection of ‘other horses (associated horses) who are somehow your outsiders. There are 2 different
Field formulas:
The Reduced Field: you supplement your base horses with part of the other horses in the race
Example: you play Quinté +. You are sure of 4 horses but you hesitate between three canassons to complete your Quinté. You then play in Reduced Field on 3 – 7 – 2 – 4 in base and on 12 – 6 – 1 in associated horses.
You win the Quinté + report, if the finish result is 3 – 7 – 2 – 4 – 12 or 3 – 7 – 2 – 4 – 6 or 3 – 7 – 2 – 4 – 1.
Your base bet increases according to the number of base horses and associated horses that you bet.
The Total Field: you complete your base horses with all the other horses in the race
Example: you play the Trio on a race with 8 runners. You are on 2 horses but completely unsure which one will complete the podium. You then play in Total Field the 4 – 1 in base and the 2 – 3 – 5 – 6 – 7 – 8 in associated horses.
You win the Trio report if your base horses are in the top three, no matter which horse completes the podium.
Your base bet increases depending on the number of base horses you bet, and the number of horses in the race.
