State of form

After playing its last World Cup in 1998, Morocco is making a comeback in the most important international competition this summer. The Atlas Lions made a very good impression during the playoffs in the Africa zone by winning the 1st place of a group that included the Ivory Coast, Gabon and Mali and conceding no goals. Since last March, Hervé Renard’s players have played five friendlies. They first won against Serbia (2-1) and Uzbekistan (2-0). Opposite, Iran has quietly validated its ticket to the 2018 World Cup after finishing in first and unbeaten group A qualifiers in the Asian zone, ahead of South Korea in particular. In March, Iran dominated Sierra Leone (4-0) and Algeria (2-1), but lost to Tunisia (0-1). Morocco coach Hervé Renard has finally chosen his 23 players for this 2018 world and we can mention 2 big absentees: midfielder Boufal (Southampton), dismissed, and the second top scorer in Ligue 2, Alioui (Nîmes), injured. The group is led by its leaders Benatia (Juventus), Dirar (Fenerbahçe), Saïss (Wolverhampton), Boussoufa (Al-Jazeera), Belhanda (Galatasaray), El-Ahamadi (Feyenoord), Ziyech (Ajax Amsterdam), Carcela ( Standard Liège) and Boutaïb (Matalyaspor). There are also known leaders in Ligue 1 like Mendyl (Lille) Ait Bennasser (Caen) or El Hajjam (Amiens). The Bundesliga’s best youngster this season, former Harit (Schalke 04) is also on the list, as well as Real Madrid’s young side Hakimi (Real Madrid).

Iran has announced a list of 23 classic for this World Cup. The coach Carlos Queiroz will be able to count on all his executives: the goalkeeper Beiravand (Persepolis), the defenders Montazeri (Esteghal), Rezaeian (Oostende) and Pouraliganji (Al-Sadd), Hajsafi circles (Olympiakos), Shojaei (AEK Athens), Amiri (Persepolis) and Dejagah (Nottingham Forest), as well as strikers Azmoun (Rubin Kazan), Ansarifard (Olympiakos) and Jahanbakhsh (Alkmaar, top scorer in the Dutch league this season).
